Immigrants of Haitian descent and their children represent a rapidly increasing population in the U. Early sexual activity places youth, particularly females, at greater risk of unintended pregnancy, delinquency, acquiring HIV or other STDs, and other negative social and psychological outcomes. Intervention and prevention efforts have been most effective when they are implemented early, target multiple risky behaviors, and involve multi-level domains. Haitian adolescents, as an understudied population, might be best reached with interventions that take into account the risk factors, as well as the protective factors, associated with this group. In the literature, examination of risk and protective factors among children and adolescents generally occurs across five major domains of influence.

Background: Female sex workers FSW are socially and economically marginalized, and this vulnerability can be exacerbated when they hold the intersectional identity of also being an immigrant, such as in the case of Haitian FSWs in the Dominican Republic.
