Sexual maturity rating SMR is important in population studies and in clinical care. Pubertal staging allows doctors to assess the maturation of adolescents to correlate several pubertal phenomena such as age at menarche, growth spurt and final height, to advise and manage patients appropriately and to have sensitive "sensors" of the effects of environmental exposure on human populations. The commonly used markers of the timing of female puberty are thelarche and menarche. The assessment of Tanner stages by professionals provides more reliable information than self-assessment but may involve variations between observers. Tanner self-assessment has been proposed as an alternative in various studies.
Puberty in Girls
Puberty: Adolescent Female
During adolescence, major biological as well as psychological developments take place. Development of sexuality is an important bio-psycho-social development, which takes an adult shape during this period. During adolescence, an individual's thought, perception as well as response gets colored sexually. Puberty is an important landmark of sexuality development that occurs in the adolescence. The myriad of changes that occurs in adolescents puts them under enormous stress, which may have adverse physical, as well as psychological consequences. Understanding adolescent sexuality has important clinical, legal, social, cultural, as well as educational implications. Growth and development are continuous processes, which bring a change in an individual, every moment.
Adolescent Girls’ Sexual Development
During adolescence, physical activity tends to decline, especially among girls. Adolescent inactivity is due in part to biological factors, among which pubertal development may play a role. Our aim was to study in girls, the relationship of sexual maturation based on menarche with physical activity and sedentary behaviour. Analyses were based on a two-stage random sample of 3, year-old girls included in the cross-sectional Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey carried out in French-speaking schools.
During adolescence usually considered age 10 to the late teens or early 20s , boys and girls reach adult height and weight and undergo sexual maturation puberty. The timing and speed with which these changes occur vary and are affected by both heredity and environment. See also Health Supervision of the Well Child.
