There are a multitude of pro-anorexia sites where girls with the eating disorder can exchange tips to lose weight. These sites often also include 'coaches', who guide girls and even scold or punish them if they don't do as told. These 'pro-ana-coaches' are often men who deliberately seek out girls with eating disorders to get nude photos or even sex from them, according to the first results of a Dutch study into these coaches, NOS reports. The study is still ongoing, but the researchers are so shocked by their findings that they decided to already release the initial results, they said to the broadcaster. They want to warn girls, their parents, the authorities and others involved about the risks. The researchers posted two fake profiles on public forums for girls with anorexia seeking help with weight loss: year-old Jisse and year-old Sarina.

Top definition. There are, in fact, two separate pro-ana "movements" - both of which function mostly via the Internet. One movement let's call it M1 attempts to glamourize and glorify a horrifying disease this would be the group that gets the most publicity ; the other M2 acts as a support for those who suffer from Anorexia Nervosa but are not yet "ready" to recover. These are the groups that promote Anorexia as a "lifestyle choice".
Last week, while researching an article, I came across a pro-ana WhatsApp group. It basically functions as a forum for young women who are dedicated anorexics and see anorexia as a lifestyle choice rather than the life-threatening disease it can be. As painful as it was to see teenagers push one another deeper into anorexia, the forum itself wasn't the most disturbing part of the experience. The Swiss blog Skinnylicious is another pro-ana forum, a sort of paradise for young girls who are toying with the idea of becoming anorexic. It has something called a "twin market," where these young ladies place ads looking for others with the same clothing measurements.
This was doubly funky because Mary Jane is pretty much a world expert in this area. This is something that I feel personally invested in because, during the final year of my BA, I chose to let myself myself become dangerously thin for a number of reasons. The pressures of aiming for a high result; choosing to drink rather than eat very common with male anorexics ; relationship issues; feeling that I had lost control of other aspects of my life but being able to control what I ate, and, wanting to punish myself unconsciously for the growing realisation that I had a bipolar condition. So, attempting to look at the ana-mia movements from a non-pathological point of view was something that was really important to me. The following is an extract from what Mary Jane and I wrote:.
